Project Example
Smuggler’s Gulch
Focus: Revegetation and erosion control
Location : International Border in southern San Diego, CA
Habitat Type: Coastal sage scrub
Implementation: RECON removed non-native thatch, installed a drip irrigation system serviced with reclaimed water, and planted 95,000 container plants over 26 acres. The project stabilized steep, manufactured slopes along the border fence and enhanced native vegetative coverage in areas where several applications of hydroseed had failed to establish.
Maintenance: A five-year maintenance and monitoring period included irrigation system operation and maintenance, erosion control, and weed abatement. The site was considered successfully restored when the target native vegetative cover, weed cover, and soil stability goals were achieved.
